Powai was witness to yet another first last evening – a Wine tasting session ! As a part of their tenth anniversary celebrations, Out of the Blue organized an evening of wine tasting for it’s patrons. Conducted by Wine Sommelier Nikhil Agarwal from www.allthingsnice.in, it was an evening of fun & learning !
I’ve never been to a wine tasting before so I didn’t know what to expect when I got there. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the tables had been set up with a number of wine glasses that gleamed in the glow of the beautifully etched lithophanes. Platters of cheese, crackers & olives alongwith bread baskets adorned the tables. Our sommelier for the evening, pleasant & likeable, was walking around the tables meeting guests & apologizing for the delay.
As guests, we were allowed to taste a selection of Indian wines in the company of a wine educator in comparative wine flights. As the evening unfurled, we were treated to a variety of white wines, ranging from Chenin Blanc to Sauvignon Blanc and red wines, ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon to Shiraz from companies as well known as Grovers’, Sula & Four Seasons to newer ones like Fratelli, York, Zampa & Revelio. The wine educator hosting the session illustrated simple tasting and evaluating techniques which we employed to give marks to each glass of wine. In being able to share our thoughts & reactions out loud with a cross section of people, it also opened up our mind & senses to the unexpected ! For instance, a certain gentleman claimed he could taste bacon upon tasting a red wine which we found really weird. Upon tasting the wine, however, we couldn’t think of anything other than the smokiness of bacon !
The objective of the Wine Tasting programme at Out of the Blue was to “break the barriers of the unapproachable, snobby reputation of wine drinking in India” making us confident enough to identify wine styles, quality & brands to enable us make the right choice in future. Coupled with a young & spirited Sommelier it was the perfect excuse to get away from home on a weekday !
