How a campaign by Powai residents to give away old used cycles went viral.

Our team ‘Enjoy Sharing’, in collaboration with Lifeforce Foundation, stumbled upon an idea of Cycle distribution. It was a simple idea wherein we collect and give away old used cycles which are lying unused in the basements of most of the Buildings in Powai, refurbish and donate them to the deserving kids at Buddha Vihar, Workers colony and around Powai.

”300 Wings of Freedom"

After brainstorming it was decided that we should start a virtual campaign to see the response as in these difficult times such an act of donating would touch the hearts of many. So a very unique message was created where an image of an old unused cycle and smiling kid receiving the refurbished one was made.

The campaign becomes a Viral success

This message went viral on WhatsApp by early Feb. We were expecting to collect 30-40 cycles around Powai / Andheri.

We were pleasantly surprised to attend approx 500 calls, numerous Whatsapp messages in the months of February and March and at a final count were able to collect 300+ cycles.

In the process, we travelled to Walkeshwar, Palawa, Kandivali, JNPT, Thane, and other places to collect the cycles. Every other day our pick up vehicle would cover some or other part of Mumbai.

The campaign which we wanted to limit to Powai/ Andheri, reached across Mumbai and everyone was very happy and willing to donate cycles, old toys, books and clothes to underprivileged kids.

Storage of the old cycles

Our first task after collecting the cycles was storing this massive inventory, so in this, some Hiranandani societies helped us. We would really to thank the management of Glen Heights, Florentine & Verona for their support.

For repairs, we engaged multiple cycle repair shops around Powai and also developed a support team out of volunteers from the Workers colony.

Redesigned Distribution Plan

As we got so many cycles we redesigned the distribution plan, we reached out to many NGOs who had carried on such activities in the past and they guided us to new distribution destinations. Thanks to them we got connected with a Tribal school at Palghar and a Govt school at Titwala. We were able to share cycles and other supplies like shoes and school bags to the kids of these remote schools who sometimes had to walk 45 mins one way to reach the school. Providing a functioning cycle was like giving the kids wings as they could reach school in 10 mins while enjoying the journey.

These last couple of months were very fulfilling, exciting and happening. From attending several calls daily from people happy to share their old bikes, spending time in the evening to work on the spreadsheet to optimise route map for our pick up vehicle, spending time at the repair shop to check the quality of repairs, shipping refurbished cycles to far off places and receiving the handwritten notes from the happy kids. It really was a humbling experience for all of us.

Future Plans

Now after reaching out to 300 families and sharing the gifts with 300 kids we don‘t wish to stop here. There is a requirement for more cycles in the places we touched, like schools in Titwala, Palghar as we could cover only 10 % of the requirement, so we wish to continue This Initiative, seeking more support from you all.

Sharing With joy is a glorious path we set to continue on and do our bit to help underprivileged children holistically. In this pursuit, the “Enjoy Sharing” team salutes & Thanks donors of Powai & Mumbai for giving happiness to 300 Kids.
