Know your Powai Corporator [ward 115]-Smt. Charu Chandan Sharma.

By Elsie Gabriel

An insight into Powai’s political biography reveals that the Sharma’s are not new to taking care of Powai, as much of the land was owned by them before being sold to various developers. Powai has changed it’s face but the Sharma’s have stayed faithful to their land and it’s people!

Powai’s Ward 115 has Charu Chandan Sharma needs no introduction,as she is considered a people’s person and relates to Powaites on a daily basis on a series of issues making her a true Powai leader. Renewing her husbands decade long tenure as a pragmatic leader with a driving sense of mission, young, a social worker at heart, many conclude that Charu Sharma over the years has displayed the virtues of a crusading leader who knows her people. Charu is a graduate in Arts from Delhi University, with experience in Community welfare work and social service; well know for social work practice special interests: Education and Health.

Charu Sharma’s accomplishments have been extraordinary and yet discreet. She surely demonstrates that a political leader needn’t be overtly popular to be effective. Charu has championed causes of the Poor  and for the poor!

Some of her outstanding achievements-

Roads :  There are various Roads in and around Powai like Khokha Company towards Hiranandani, Hiranandani Hospital GL compound  to IIT Main Gate etc. were constructed, repaired and foot-paths were made to the people of Powai to walk especially for the Senior citizens and school children.

Vachnalaya : Constructed  Vachnalya for the senior citizen of powai and Balwadi`s at Gautam Nagar, Hari Om Nagar, Saminarayan Nagar , Hanuman Road for Children.

Senior Citizens Center at IIT Powai-A much awaited community center for the elders was fulfilled for the local residents recently by Charu Sahrma.Fully equipped with computers, a library and entertainment , senior citizens can play, interact and share their problems here. This has come as a blessing to all who have fulfilled their working years and taken care of their families only to retire to old age.

Drains: Several drains were constructed for the easy flow of water and drains were repaired and re-constructed on many occasions to help the people of Powai. She has also concentrated on storm water drains leading to Powai lake and followed up with the BMC during emergencies.

The Powai Cemetry -located just below the Parksite area is maintained and regularly supervised by her team.

Water Supply:  Powai is a place, where there was a heavy water problem.  After continuous follow-ups such as Morchas, Dharnas, Uposhan etc. M.C.G.M. has laid 24”. 18”.9” 6” and 4” Water Pipelines to help the people of Powai to get sufficient water.  Inspite of doing this, there was still water problem in the hilly areas and therefore, we have constructed a Suction Tank and Pumping Arrangement at Durga Devi Sharma Udyan, with a storage capacity of 10 Lakhs Ltrs.  Water, which costs approximately 5.62 Crores.  A different water line of 60” is proposed from Filter Pada to IIT, Powai, costing upto 1.09 Crores, which is under consideration.

Play ground: A Play-ground near Tirandaz School was handed over by her to M.C.G.M. near Tirandaz Municipal School named as Late Shri. Harishchandra Sharma Udyan for the local people of Powai.

Sewerage Operations: Powai has got many slum areas and villages.   Previously Sewerlines were connected to Powai Lake, due to which water in Powai  Lake used to get spoiled, which I have diverted by laying new Sewerage lines at powai  to Some other place.People used to receive the Water bills with Sewerage charges, which she has stopped.
All residents are requested to support  her and take her assistance as well on any local issues if need be at 25782428, 25779410.
