Kalaangan, a Powai based institution for promotion of Indian Classical and Folk Dance, led by Guru Smt Moli Siddharth, recently was honoured to be the guest of the India Tourism Board Paris, and the Indian Embassy. The institution was invited to perform at the Salone Viaggitori – an travel and tourism festival in Lugano, Switzerland, held from the 29th October to the 1st of November, 2016.
Team Kalaangan, comprising of 10 dancers and Guru Smt Moli Siddharth presented 5 varied and colourful cultural items over two days to enthrall audiences with the diversity and culture of India.
The inaugural ceremony of the Festival saw Kalaangan performing to Cycle of Seasons – Ananya Prakriti – a colourful ensemble of Tagore songs set to Rabindra Nritya depicting the ever changing nature with the changing of seasons.
Kalaangan also showcased Kathak in Film by stringing together a medley of semi classical film songs across the years, Pure Kathak where they performed a Ganesh Vandana and a Jhaptaal Tarana, Bengali Folk – which comprised of an invocation to Goddess Durga, a dance set to the rhythm of the Dhak, a special type of drum used in Durga Puja and a Baul rendition and Jatayu Vadh – a ballet based on Ramayana.
The organisers and sponsors were highly impressed by the variety and the quality of the dance performances and expressed their desire of wanting to see more of Kalaangan in the years to come. The students of Kalaangan had a great experience interacting with the other musicians and dancers. For them, it was a indeed a dream come true!
