An Interview with Minoo Mantri - A Powai resident and social worker .

Profile picA multifaceted personality, Minoo Mantri, a doting mother of two kids is easy going, confident and always ready to take on change.

She is always on the pursuit of excellence both for the community and her individual self, and embodies every bit of what the American writer Andy Rooney says –
I ‘ve learned that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.
Here is an interview with Minoo about herself, her work and her experiences of living in Powai.

1. How long have you been living in Powai? And why did you decide to make Powai as your home?

Powai is our home since September 2000. The association is longer though since my son Siddharth joined HFS in 1995. It just seemed like a natural progression from living at Mahakali, Andheri that we moved to Powai once my daughter, Abhilasha too joined HFS. Today we are very happy that we took the decision and settled in Powai

yep2. Can you share some of your experiences of living in Powai, right from the day you selected the property, till today? How has Powai changed in your opinion?

As soon as we started living here, our world opened up to the fact that it made Bombay so much more approachable from here. Powai seems like the heart of Bombay since the eastern and the western are so well connected from here. Powai as a community and place has grown multifold with buildings and people. It is becoming more and more vibrant now.

3. What kind of extra amenities would you like, which are at present lacking in Powai?

In a way Powai is a well planned place and pretty much self sustained, especially the Hiranandani Complex where I live, though not in a Hiranandani constructed home. Wish they were a little more affordable than their out of reach prices!!

The only amenity I see lacking is a place/ auditorium or some such where one could hold large programs for Powaiites. Traffic which was quite a nuisance sometime back and still is towards peak hours, need better management.

4. What do you think is the biggest advantage of living in Powai ? And what to do you think is the single most disadvantage of living here in Powai?

Guess the way Powai connects you in all directions is the biggest advantage. And despite being large it keeps people connected so well.

5. Can you tell us something about professional life and the various community driven activities/properties you have created in/for Powai?

Starting at an early age, I have been volunteering with NGO’s and while doing grass root level work with old homes and teaching specially privileged children, I have also helped NGO’s with resources. Set-up Think Beyond– a NPO with like-minded motley group of friends from Powai to address various social issues, bridging gaps in the community, encouraging and sensitizing people towards the under-privileged and make a difference to the society at large in any way that we can.

While each one has been individually associated with some cause or the other, together we have been conducting Blood Donation camps to support various blood banks, thalassaemia check and awareness camps, Womens’ health awareness campaign, helped Hiranandani Hospital to conduct a 300 women cancer detection survey to name a few.

Our signature campaign is the Annual Powai Peace Walk, which was started in 2009 to commemorate the peace that prevailed after the Mumbai terror attacks 2008. The idea is to bring all stratas together and encourage the idea of strength in unity.

One year we had Ms. Indu Shahani come and encourage people, the other felicitating people from different walks of life who do untiring work towards upliftment of under privileged, to another year felicitating the Commandoes of Hiranandani by giving them insurance policies, to felicitating and acknowledging the contribution of the police force by putting up a live music concert giving young Powai bands a platform to perform.

Joseph Reddy Peace Walk InaugurationA special mention of Mr. Joseph Reddy, GM Admin/ Facilities- Hiranandani Group, is necessary at this moment for without his faith and support Think Beyond would not have been able to conduct so many of its activities. It is heart-warming to have friends in Powai who volunteer and support in all these activities. This is why it makes Powai such a special place to live in.
