An assistant commissioner of police and his orderly were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Saturday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a hotelier, to give a favourable report to renew his eatery licence.
ACP (Powai division) Krishna Choudhary was arrested by ACB sleuths at his office when his orderly accepted the money from the complainant and later allegedly gave it to the police officer. Choudhary will be produced in court on Sunday.
According to ACB sources, the complainant owns three eateries in Mumbai and one of it is in Powai. He wanted to get the licence of his hotel at Powai renewed and approached the ACP’s office when he was directed to Choudhary’s orderly, who allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 as bribe for giving a favourable report.
“The complainant runs a vegetarian restaurant and has no liquor bar. He told us that he has been closing his restaurant at 11.30 pm every day and has not violated any norms so far. He was agitated at the demand of the bribe by the police officer and hence approached us,” ACB sources said.
Following the arrests, the ACB has launched a search at the ACP’s residence and office.
