This is about the visit to one of the remedial school (under the aegis of VIDYA) situated at Phule nagar , near IIT, Powai. The school is supervised by its co-coordinator Mrs. K.B. Joshi, a retired KVIIT teacher, who has been mentoring about 65 under privileged children, from phule nagar and surya nagar, for the past 6 years.

Besides these children, Mrs. Joshi has also mentored more than 60 women by teaching them how to read and write. The passion with which she has been managing this school is unparalled. Despite belonging from an affluent family, she never let the strata difference make her wards feel alienated. Nor does she think twice even if she has to walk to school weathering all seasons. She has a son, working with Transocean and a computer engineer daughter, settled in the USA.

Below is a video interview with Mrs.Kadambari Joshi where she shares her experience about running this remedial school at Phule Nagar slums.

{VIDYA is a 25 year old NGO, started by Ms. Rashmi Mishra at Delhi IIT and brought to IIT-B in 2000. It conducts 7 parallel programmes for the underprivileged children, youth, women and communities around Powai. Of these, 3 are remedial programmes where children going to BMC schools are provided additional help for their studies. Another programme is the NIOS where youth, who have had to drop out of regular schooling out of various compulsions, come to complete theirDSC00481 10th and 12th education. The rest of the programmes comprise of a basic computer skill training centre for all categories, a skill training programme by the name “MARGAM” for women to help them earn a livelihood and finally the “AAHAAR” where women make meals and supply to corporates and some IIT staff. Through these programmes, VIDYA, Mumbai supports about 500 people from these communities. While providing a good education VIDYA also provides nutrition to these students. These programmes are run by the dedicated staff of VIDYA and supported by volunteers. }

There are many ways to support VIDYA – by volunteering to teach in one of their programmes, by providing nutrition even once a week at any one of the programmes, donating good condition old clothes, toys, books, crayons etc. If you would like to know more and support the communities around Powai you can call Mrs. Joshi on 9820537202 for supporting the phule nagar school or Ms. Mary Dias (Administrator) on 25764089.
