FRANGIPANI CHS, CHANDIVALI WINS THE SWACHATA MANKAN SPARDHA – 2020

Frangipani Cooperative Housing Society, Chandivali has won the first prize in Mumbai under the Swachh Resident Welfare Association category based on the Swachata Sarvekshan carried out by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

The award was presented on the 20th January, 2020 by Shri Aditya Thackeray, Minister for Environment and Tourism in the Govt of Maharashtra.

The Swachata Sarvekshan under the aegis of the Solid Waste Management department of MCGM was conducted by an independent entity. The resident welfare association was ranked based on various cleanliness parameters, primary amongst them was adoption of responsible waste management practices.

Chandivali

The initiative of two environmentally spirited residents Himanshu Nivsarkar and Samir Deshpande, who wanted to reduce Frangipani society’s contribution to the garbage landfill.

Frangipani CHS wanted to install a ZERO carbon footprint Wet Waste Management system. After evaluating numerous options, the drum based composting was finalized. This is an Aerobic system of composting.

Frangipani CHS has been composting wet waste from Jan, 2018. The composting unit is run by the housekeeping staff at Frangipani.

The society has processed 35 tons of wet waste till date generating 10 tons of organic compost. The compost generated is used in the society gardens, by farmers around Mumbai and also by residents. The compost is provided free of cost.

Challenges faced by Frangipani CHS Chandivali

The first major challenge faced, was to instill the discipline amongst residents on segregating wet, dry and refuge waste. Multiple training initiatives were conducted to educate the residents, children and the house help.

The second challenge was to manage the smell. Various permutations were used to minimize smell including calling experts from FMCG companies and solid waste management experts.
