NGO saves Powai lake from illegal dumping

3 min read

Taking a serious note of the complaint filed by the Plants and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Mumbai, against the illegal dumping of construction debris at Powai lake, the National River Conservation Directorate, Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), has directed the state environment secretary to look into the matter and take action against guilty on immediate basis.

Acting on tip-off that illegal debris is being dumped near Visarjan ghat at Powai lake Sunish Subramanian, secretary and founder of PAWS, rushed to the spot and collected photographic evidence of the illegal activity.
Later, the NGO shot off letters to MoEF, Chief Minister, BMC Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of S ward along with the photographs, demanding immediate action.

"The debris was being dumped near Visarjan ghat, adjacent to Bombay IIT wall. So we wrote a letter to the concerned departments, and requested them that immediate action be taken against those responsible for this malpractice and prevent further degradation of this eco-sensitive zone. Had the dumping continued, then the area's flora and fauna would have been adversely affected," said Subramanian.

"We are happy that MoEF has taken a serious note about the issue we have raised. We are waiting for the state environment department to take action against those responsible for dumping debris," he added. The NGO also feels that there should be round-the-clock security at Powai lake so that such instances don't get repeated in future.
