Powai police are on the lookout for an unidentified man who attacked the storemanager of Levi’s showroom at Hiranandani in Powai on Tuesday evening. The store manager, identified as Mahadeo Kshirsagar, 26, was alone in the showroom when he was assaulted.

Other employees of the shop had left a little earlier, while Kshirsagar stayed back to compete the accounting for the day. A passerby heard him screaming, but by the time he came in, he saw Kshirsagar lying in a pool of blood. He informed the personnel at the security office located near the showroom, who rushed Kshirsagar to Hiranandani Hospital and also informed the Powai police.

A senior police official from Powai police station said, "Kshirsagar has been admitted to the ICU as his condition is very critical. He has suffered fractures to the skull and is still unconscious. Hence, we could not record his statement." He added, "The showroom management had appointed a security guard who, according to other staff, was present with Kshirsagar when everyone left. He has been identified as Pintu, and is absconding."

Money has been found missing from the cash counter, but the exact amount is not known. Police have launched a manhunt for Pintu. After contacting the private security agency from where Pintu was hired, police went to his residence in Kurla, only to learn he had not returned since Tuesday evening.

The shop has CCTV cameras installed, but surprisingly, they have recordings only till 5.45 pm on Tuesday, after which they stopped functioning. The hammer used by the assailant was found on a table inside the shop and has been sent for forensic and fingerprints analysis.

To queer matters further, four shops near IIT Powai were broken into and goods and cash worth around Rs3.5 lac stolen on the same night. A resident, upon hearing some commotion, came out of his house to check when he spotted four unidentified men trying to break into the fifth shop. When he tried to nab one, he was attacked by the other three with a iron rod, after which the four fled from the spot. Two more cases of housebreaking were reported on the same night in Powai.
