Akshardham Powai Swaminarayan Mandir

Akshardham Powai Swaminarayan Mandir

Akshardham Powai Swaminarayan Mandir also know as International Spiritual Research Cente at Powai  is a beautiful expanse of land that was first sanctified by Yogi Bapa by the performance of a yagna. In 1978, Chandrabhan Sharmaji and family donated it to Kakaji for satsanga developmental activities.

By the efforts of the Tardev aspirant brothers, on February 3, 2003 (Kakaji’s Sakshatkardin), the International Spiritual Research Center was inaugurated. It serves as a memorial place for Guru Kakaji and a “research center” for mankind to develop the universal science of spirituality. The Swaminarayan Akshar-Purushottam mandira houses the moortis of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Anaadi Mool Akshar Moorti Gunatitanand Swami, Anaadi Maha Mukta Gopalanand Swami, and the gunaateeta lineage.

Kantikaka’s memorial shrine was established in 1986. Today, it remains on the back side of the temple, symbolizing the unique friendship between Kakaji and Kantikaka. Kantikaka, Shantibhai Seth, Nagardasbhai Kothari, Sampatdada Wagh, and others had toiled greatly for a center that echoes Kakaji’s divine life. Also in the back side is the Saadhaka-santa residence, innagurated on February 13, 2005 (Vasant Panchami).

Chinmayananda Mission’s Sandeepany Sadhanalaya Powai

Chinmayananda Mission’s Sandeepany Sadhanalaya Powai

In the lush green environs of Mumbai’s suburban haven Powai, lies the Chinmayananda Mission’s Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, set up in 1961. Situated on a hill top, the Sadhanalaya provides a panoramic view of the Powai lake and the surrounding areas. Located inside the complex is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Jagadeeswara. This Shiv temple is remarkable for the mammoth Shivlingam on the dome of the temple.

Strolling through the sprawling leafy campus of the Chinmaya Mission in Powai is like stepping back in time. No cowdung huts and thatched roofs here, but one is reminded of the forest hermitages of the ancient sages as, far from the snarl of vehicular traffic outside, an air of tranquility and piety pervades within. The reverential hush inside Gurudev’s kuti as the relics bring the memory of the Master to life, the soothing sonority of Sanskrit shlokas chanted in unison, and the proximity of nature help one withdraw within and dwell on the mystery that is life.

Entrance

Towering over the Mission grounds, built on a hillock, is the architecturally striking Jagdeeshwara Temple; its massive arch built to resemble a Buddhist stupa with an inscription from the Koran on it make for a refreshing assertion of the unity of faiths. In the evenings it is the scene of the electrically charged satsangs held by Swami Tejomayananda or another of the acharyas, as crickets chirp outside and the city lights of Powai glimmer in the distance below.
One notices young boys and girls, their full white outfits distinct from the yellow and ochre worn by the renunciate swamis and acharyas, going about their routines. These are the future torchbearers of the movement, undergoing training at the gurukul that represents the very heart of the Chinmaya Mission. They are participating in the Vedanta Course, also known as the Brahmacharya Course, the 13th batch of its kind held since the establishment of this center. In one sense this Sadhanalaya is a boarding school for those in search of Vedantic knowledge. Of course, unlike a boarding school, which is only affordable by the rich, Chinmaya Mission provides free boarding and lodging to eligible students at the Sandeepany. Normally students stay here for a period of about two and a half years, without any home visits. However they do take trips to holy places for special camps.

Swami Chinmayananda

The Chinmaya Mission was started in 1953 at the instance of a handful of disciples, to give expression to Swami Chinmayananda’s vision and philosophy.

Its purpose, as stated in his own words, “To provide to individuals from any background the wisdom of Vedanta and the practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, enabling them to become positive contributors to society.

A brief History of Shree Devi Padmavati Mandir

A brief History of Shree Devi Padmavati Mandir

It has been conclusively established that the village Powai has been in existence for more than a thousand years. Its ancient name was Poumvi and the shores of the lake turn along the old horse route joining this area with Sahyadri range (western ghats). The word "Powai" is Portuguese maltransformation of the original name.

Initially, soon after the renaissance period in the history of Mumbai, a group of several islands was colonized by Portuguese. In 1642, the handover of the state to the British was carried over in the vicinity of Powai.

In order to reach Powai from the east direction one has to climb over a hill and cross the holy trinity church, the first land mark. Hence, the oldest church of Mumbai is in Powai. It is also said that once upon a time prior to the existence of the church, this was the most sacred place not only for Christians but also for all other communities. There used to be a huge bell in the church. Its sound would cover a circular area of radius of 50 kms. In addition, this location served as a strategic point where from reconnaissance of an invader alighting from a ship landing at the creek could be easily made at the earliest.
