Powai buildings take lead in saving energy

In one of the biggest hour-long energy saving exercise  at a single location, 20 residential and commercial buildings at the Hiranandani Gardens at Powai conserved 51.77 lakh watts of power during Earth Hour on Saturday. The energy saved is equivalent to a day’s requirement of 115 households. Last year, only 12 buildings in Powai participated and saved 3.46 lakh watts.

For the last one month, Rajiv Singh was busy convincing employees working at the Kensington B-wing commercial building at Powai to switch off their non-essential lights and observe Earth Hour.

On Saturday, the building won the first prize for saving the maximum electricity in a competition organised by the Powai-based Young Environmentalists Programme Trust (YEPT). The building conserved 24.95 lakh watts in the one hour, saving Rs 40,000.

“We need to be careful of how we treat the Earth. Conserving energy would not just help in fighting global warming but also reduce our carbon footprint,” said Singh, Kensington’s area manager.

Commercial building Ventura and residential building Somerset won the second and third prize respectively.

“Ideally, every household should switch off their lights for an hour every day. We would not just save our electricity costs, but also be able to contribute towards supplying power for those who have no access,” said Simon Sigo, area manager, Somerset.

“Eco-friendly consumption patterns in our daily habits will help utilise the resources wisely,” said Elsie Gabriel, founder, YEPT.
